Iron in patch instructions

Step by step instruction guide to attach your iron on embroidery patch! a great way to personalise your favourite items.

 

Before you start:

Please check the fabric type! Only use an iron-on patch on materials that can safely handle heat (like cotton, denim, or polyester blends). Do not iron onto fabrics such as nylon, silk, leather, or anything with a waterproof or plastic coating — these can melt or become damaged. If you are unsure please check the washing instructions on any garment to see if it allows ironing.

What You’ll Need
• Your iron-on patch
• A household iron (no steam) or a heat press
• A thin cloth or pressing parchment (like a tea towel or cotton pillowcase)
• A clean, flat surface (like an ironing board or sturdy table)

Step-by-Step Instructions
• Prepare the Fabric
• Lay your garment or item flat on the ironing board.
• Make sure the surface is clean, smooth, and free from wrinkles.
• Position the Patch
• Place the patch exactly where you want it to be.
• The adhesive side (the shiny or slightly rough side) should face down onto the fabric.
• Cover and Protect
• Place a thin cloth or piece of parchment paper over the patch. (For extra protection  on thin material items you can place baking paper inside the clothing item to ensure the adhesive does not adhere to both the front and back layer)
• This protects both the patch and the fabric from direct heat.
• Set the Iron
• Heat your iron to the cotton or medium-high setting.
• Turn off the steam — you need dry heat for the adhesive to bond properly.
• Press the Patch
• Firmly press the iron straight down on the covered patch for 15–20 seconds.
• Don’t move the iron around; steady pressure gives the best result.
• Check and Repeat if Needed
• Lift the cloth carefully and check if the edges are fully sealed.
• If not, cover again and press for another 10–15 seconds.
• Cool and Set
• Let the patch and fabric cool completely (about 5 minutes).
• Cooling helps the adhesive bond securely.

Care tips
• Wait at least 24 hours before washing.
• Wash inside out on a gentle, cold cycle.
• Avoid high heat in the dryer — air dry if possible.

Tip: For extra durability (especially on frequently washed items), you can sew around the edges of the patch after ironing.
